The
people of the Middle Ages who exercise regularly and are physically fit
have a much lower risk of developing chronic health problems associated
with old age , researchers at the Cooper Institute , Dallas , USA reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
The authors add that even a moderate increase fitness in midlife may help reduce the risk of developing several chronic diseases twenty years later.
Several studies have examined how the physical condition could have an impact on the health and longevity of older people . A report published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in 2008 showed that aerobic quarantine may delay biological aging up to 12 years , as well as obtaining an independent life in old age.
Dr. Benjamin L. Willis and his team collected data on insurance claims information on participants in the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study , involving 14,726 men and 3,944 women. The data ranged from 1970-2008 . All participants were healthy and had an overall mean age of 49 years at baseline .
The researchers were looking for the impact of eight chronic diseases after 65 years: disease , colon or lung cancer Alzheimer 's disease , kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD disease) , stroke , ischemic heart , diabetes and congestive heart failure .The authors wrote :
"In this study , more physical measured in middle age is strongly associated with a lower incidence of SCC decades later. "Participants were followed for an average of 26 years . Those at the top of fitness had a much lower incidence of chronic diseases later in life compared with the lowest quintile ( 1.5 vs 28.2 per 100 person - years for males and 11 , 4 Quintile vs 20.1 for women) .
The fitness levels of the participants were measured for them to do certain tasks on a treadmill. Found that even modest improvements in the ability to reduce the risk age for chronic diseases later. The authors wrote :
" For example, a 1 - to 2 -MET [ metabolic equivalents ] to improve the physical condition resulting from the promotion of the first to the second quintile of fitness at age 50 was associated with a 20 percent reduction in the incidence of SCC at the age of 65 years and more. "Half of physical life seems more related to a lower incidence of chronic diseases later that improved survival, which also benefits , but less , the researchers noted . Willis explained that "Compared with participants with low capacity to quarantine those with a greater ability to quarantine seems to devote a greater proportion of their last five years of life with a lower burden of chronic diseases . "
In other words, the physical quarantine increase your chances of living healthier in old age and at low risk of developing chronic diseases . Your life can benefit too. His last year of life are more likely to be free of chronic disease , or at least less affected by anti unfit middle-aged people .
Commentary in the same journalDr. Diane Bild , the Heart , Lung and Blood National , Bethesda , Maryland, said Dr. Willis and his team have provided convincing evidence of the importance of physical fitness in middle age as a contributing factor in better health the future.Dr. Bild added:
"Fitness can be a key to healthy aging , but the interpretation and translation of the conclusions of this article requires some care .... However, fitness is a function of both exercise and genetics .
Because probably genetics play a role in longevity and certainly plays a role in the prevention of the disease, although some of these genes are involved in physical fitness and longevity , which can serve as a significant confounding factors in the interpretation attractive leads to the fitness exercise, leading to healthy aging.
"The research on healthy aging is important for the knowledge of a healthier and more active and possibly reduce the cost of health care . Besides observational studies , as in this case , clinical trials are needed to establish definitely the benefits and risks of the approaches that have been shown in observational studies to be associated with health and prolong life. "Researchers at the University of Kansas School of Medicine Kansas City, in 2009 , found that even if someone has a chronic illness such as Alzheimer 's disease , fitness (cardio ) has been shown to reduce brain atrophy in patients in the early stages of disease.
Being physically fit during quarantine is increasingly rare . Researchers fom the University of Houston , Texas, published a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2009, showed that all we become less fit as we age ,
with declines accelerating after age 45.
They added that the U.S. population is aging , but increasingly sedentary and obese at the same time. Unless the fitness levels of U.S. middle-aged and elderly to enhance the incidence of chronic diseases in the elderly will increase dramatically.
